Winter Camping – Bailey, CO
This was a good trip gone bad. First of all this would be more like car camping. We only hiked about a quarter mile in to a pre-established camp site. Weather was amazing to start with but ended up getting chilly fast. We didn’t gather enough fire wood to keep the fire going more than a couple hours. Krystal and I both fell through the ice…twice for me. I forgot to bring gloves. Who does that in the winter? I also forgot to bring hand warmers…after I looked at my pile of them and said I had enough. The last important thing I forgot was my Nalgene water bottles to also help keep my bag warm.
Extra gear that brought was the MSR Whisperlite Stove with 2 pots for boiling water. Foods we tried were bacon and cheddar mashed potatoes with chicken added. Wasn’t a bad meal I don’t think. I saved my chicken Alfredo for another trip.
Like always I slept like crap. With an injured hand, it didn’t fare to well in the cold weather and I kept waking up with stiff frozen fingers.
Other than that, we had a blast and look forward to going again.
